We sat down with IFBB Professional Bodybuilder Hidetada Yamagishi to find out what got him started in the fitness industry, what keeps him going and what advice he can offer for anyone on their own fitness journey!
Check out the interview below.
Q. Why fitness?
Hidetada: I started lifting weight for rugby football when I was in high school. I fell in love right away because I could see my body changing so quick and it made me feel good. It was natural for me to start competing when I was 19, bodybuilding became my passion since then, it’s not just work, it’s my life.
Q. What are your personal goals?
Hidetada: I always wanted to be the best I can be and when I started winning shows within only a few years of training, I noticed I have something special and wanted to be IFBB pro. It took me almost 10 years to get my pro card tho.
Q. Who inspires you?
Hidetada: The gym I was training in when I started was very hardcore gym, they have many bodybuilders training there. I watched these guys training hard and was inspired by every one of them.
Q. What is your favourite ‘lift’ at the moment?
Hidetada: I always like to train legs, I mentioned I started out in real hardcore gym which had all American equipment, especially great leg machines, which was very rare to find back then in Japan so all the guys trained that gym had great legs.
Q. What keeps you going on the hard days?
Hidetada: I love working out so I never have days I’m not motivated in the gym, but when you’re getting ready for a show you will feel that tiredness from around 3-4 weeks out, that’s when you really suffer from all the dieting and training for the show. I just keep my head down and do what I need to do, nothing else.
Q. What are your favourite times to use your Gripped Headphones?
Hidetada: I use them every morning when I do fasted cardio, it’s a must have item!
Q. What has been your favourite moment throughout your fitness journey?
Hidetada: My Arnold classic win!
Q. What’s a random fact that many people wouldn’t know about you?
Hidetada: Since I have been competing for over 20 years you would think I am a very patient guy but I am actually the opposite. I’ve never had something I could just keep doing year after year like a hobby... I get bored very quickly. Bodybuilding is the only thing I have kept doing all these years.
Q. What has been your biggest challenge through your fitness journey, and how did you overcome it?
Hidetada: I have suffered from some injuries in last few years and they really set me back which affected my contest result. As I am getting older I’ve noticed I cannot do certain things as I used to and need to make adjustments. It’s not fun but necessary to stay in the game for as long as possible.
Q. What advice would you pass on to someone in their own fitness journey?
Hidetada: Be patient. Were in the era of people wanting things instantly but in reality, it’s not like that. Enjoy every step and do not rush.
